The Chicago Alternative Comics Expo, or CAKE, is coming up June 15th and 16th at Center on Halsted. My friend Johnny Misfit has organized a special fundraiser for the expo via the reading series he hosts, Two Cookie Minimum.
Here is the promo flyer I designed for the fundraiser – text by Johnny Misfit:
As you can see, I was inspired by the cake that caused Alice to grow larger in Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. I combined the Wonderland characters with the opening sequence on The Brady Bunch, and gave Alice Nelson the magical confection. (Eight points to anyone who can name all the characters surrounding Alice.)
While I was working on the illustration, I created several variations using digital effects. Here are the ones I liked best:
In the end, I used the original line art for the flyer, sans digital effects, because I liked its clarity. But it was fun to dip my feet into the aesthetic of Zip-a-tone once again.
I encourage anyone who will be in the Chicago area in three weeks to attend CAKE. There are a lot of amazing guests lined up. It will be a unique opportunity to see exciting and original work.
